April 5, 2012 New Weekly All-Water Services from Asia Comes to Houston Hanjin Shipping has joined COSCO Container Lines Americas in launching an all-water service connecting Asia and Houston via the Panama canal. The weekly service is scheduled to launch from Shanghai April 29 and arrive May 28. The two carriers, part of the CKYH Green Alliance among COSCO, "K" Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin, will deploy eight Panamax container ships with capacities of 4,250 20-foot equivalent units apiece on the new service. COSCO will deploy six of the ships, and Hanjin, two. The service will call Pusan, Shanghai (Waigaoqiao Terminal), Ningbo, Xiamen, Yantian, Colon (Panama) and Houston (Barbours Cut Terminal). Hanjin already has numerous U.S. Services, but the new "All Water Texas" service appears to be its first service calling in the U.S. Gulf. Houston will be the only U.S. port of call for the service. The new service could bring significant new business to Houston as demand for direct services has grown significantly as a result of a strong regional economy and a fast-growing population. Houston has consistently ranked as North America's strongest metropolitan area, leading the country's economic recovery. The inaugural run will also be the maiden voyage of the MV COSCO Auckland, celebrating her addition to the COSCO fleet. The new AWT service joins CMA CGM's existing PEX3 service, which has operated as an all-water service between Asia and Houston for several years. The Asian all-water service is the fastest-growing trade segment for the Port of Houston Authority. Source: Port of Houston www.portofhouston.com |
